55 word stories

I'm bringing back an old favorite from last semester (and if you did this last semester, you cannot reuse your old story): I'm including a link below to a website that publishes stories of exactly 55 words.  Read a few of them, and then you have one of two choices: a.) do a standard 250 word post discussing the stories or b.) try writing a 55 word story of your own.  The rules for a 55 word story: 1.) I will be checking to make sure it is exactly 55 words (otherwise, it wouldn't be a 55 word story), 2.) you can title it, but it doesn't count towards the 55 words, and 3.) there are no restrictions on content, but keep in mind this is a public forum, so exercise common sense.

Whichever option you choose, I'll give you until Sunday night (03/06) to get it done.  You only have to do one post this week because of conferences.

  1. THE THREE DIAMONDS:

    Three diamonds you see..
She wears them on her shoes and on her bag..
These three diamonds are on her car.
    They hang from her ears.
You see them through the months of August-February.
    In January these diamonds shined.
But in February the yellow, red, and blue diamonds of the steelers lost its spark.

  2. Staring out amongst the crowd, the faces blended together. It was truly nothing more than her and the stage. The blinding lights had blurred her vision and dimmed the fear. She was ready for another shot at fame. A faint noise, it must be the music. She opened her eyes. A new day had arrived.

  3. Preseason conditioning had finally finished, and she was ready to be out on the court. Her family and friends were excited, and had awaited for this day since she signed her scholarship. As the whistle blew, the fans cheered. She had gotten her first kill, and she was ready to win the game.

  4. Her time had finally come. It was her turn to perform on stage. It was her turn to show everyone what she can do and her turn to dance her heart out to the world. The lights are cued and the music starts. Before she knows it her dance is done and the audience applauds.

Adopted at 13 my girl grew up to catch the eye of one marine,
him being my father but to her no bother.
She my mother and wife my mother’s mother,
by law... I’m my own grandpa.

  6. Interactive Medium?
The dark beyond, virgin territory – not yet traversed by sentient kind; or has it?
I stare into the celestial void, my thoughts exploring what my body cannot.
Images captured by an artificial eye – indifferent – are an insult.
The experience is so close, yet…
I close my eyes, enter that hollow reverie and lay down the controller.

  8. She stood at the top of the grand mountain. Looking down from the icy slopes, she peered into Lake Tahoe, almost five thousand feet away. It was her first black diamond and she was determined. She peered up at the glorious, shining sun, pointed her skies downhill toward the icy ledge, and never looked back.

  9. To stumble is not to waste time. To stumble is to learn. To stumble is to find. To stumble is to be doing something that has the chance to be enlightening instead of wasting your time stalking people on facebook. But…to stumble is way too addicting. Give yourself at least two hours to stumble.

  10. I've finish the long race and all of my running is done, but yet it seems to me like you've just begun. So I’m sitting here at the yellow finish line, waiting for you to realize what I mean when I look into your brown eyes. I’m patently waiting on you to claim your prize.

  11. Carpe Diem
Sleepy eyes slowly open to see the sun shining. A new day, one nobody has experienced before. Many possibilities; new adventures to be had. For someone it’s a good day, for someone it’s bad. Opportunity knocks, do you let it in? Just one blink, so much is different. What will you do today?

  12. Who could ever write a story in only fifty five words? Just the idea creates a sense of fear in the mind. With only fifty five words being used, how could there possibly be a beginning, middle, and an ending. While most would agree that this is impossible, I believe it has already been done.

  13. I really enjoyed this 55 word story because it is about the idea of comforting someone even though you may have the same fear and not even know it. In this story, a girl has this psychological fear of heights; so her date reassures her that there is nothing to be ashamed of. Little does he know that he really cannot handle being on the ferris wheel because he becomes very queasy upon reaching the top. Her fear disappears though as soon as they went up. I can relate to this story because whenever someone tells they are going to fail the test, I tell them that there is nothing to worry about; and that they will be fine. As soon as we get the grades back, I am the one who does poorly. The person who thought that they were going to do very poorly actually gets an excellent grade. One message to take away from this story is to realize that you must always watch out for your mind playing tricks on you because the boy, who is trying to impress this girl, becomes very sick while she turns out to be fine. The theme of this story is confidence because a few positive words can have a big effect on someone. The girl’s emotions slowly transitioned from panic to “delight,” as the story says. The boy, on the other hand was too confident, and ended up trying not to become too sick.

"I feel stupid," she said. "It's just a ferris wheel."
He smiled reassuringly. "Tons of people are scared of heights. Just think how brave you'll feel!"
She clutched his arm as they swooped upwards. The panic in her eyes melted to awe, then delight. He grinned, and desperately tried to control his own tumbling stomach.

  14. His eyes were the mix of green and hazel. His personality was the best around. Then he enlisted in the military. And like that he was gone. She loved him dearly. The day he came home seemed the greatest as they were reunited. Soon, they were married and my sister lived happily ever after.

  15. A little boy sits on the beach and makes a sand castle with his father. It is very bright yet the little boy cannot see his father's face. Realizing he's dreaming he gets up, hugs him tight and says "at least i get to see you in my dreams". Beepbeepbeep The Alarm clock goes off.

  16. They were best friends since first grade. They’d walk home together from school every day. She’d invite him over to have peanut butter-and-jelly sandwiches and chocolate milk. He’d stay until it was time for bed. They would do it all again the next day. This was the first day they were apart in eighteen years.

  17. The school semester had been going well so far. Some students felt that they were in the clear for Spring Break. My class grades had been straight A’s up until this point. With the school atmosphere winding down in the last week, I let myself slip. Bombed a test, and posted my journal entry late.

  18. life lessons

It was a very cold winter on the farm. It was so chilly that a poor bird fell from the sky because he was too cold to fly. A random cow appeared and shit on the bird to keep him warm. Suddenly, A stray cat dug the bird out of the shit and ate him.

  19. The bird landed on the window sill, chirping steadily as the sun rose in the distance, as if he was the world’s own personal alarm clock. Looking outside the window you can see the trees shadowing the dark green grass that was now glistening with dew. What a beautiful day this will end up being.
